My work The Crossing is an imagined depiction of one of the nights where I crossed the ocean as an infant, nights like which still being lived by thousands of refugees today. Those forced to flee their countries often must do so at night, finding themselves confronted by the vast blackness of the sea, the moonless nights, the unscrupulous smugglers. This gloomy immensity appears to me as synonymous with anguish, a probable death, an unknown tomorrow. With the mass of black paint placed on this canvas I speak about the anxieties and fears of exile, while the reflections of illumination echo hopes of survival.
Through The Crossing, I approach, with only the colour black, a new narrative dimension of my practice. In evoking Pierre Soulages’ outrenoir (beyond black), I attempt to give a figurative value to the tragic history of every person who has had to flee.
